C<\/span><\/span>ritically ill patients of Greek ethnicity, suffering from COVID-19 pneumonia, who were directly admitted to the ICU of the \u201c<\/span><\/span>Evangelismos<\/span><\/span>\u201d General Hospital from 22 March to 3 August <\/span><\/span>2020.<\/span><\/span> The <\/span><\/span><\/span>study<\/span><\/span><\/span> tracked<\/span><\/span><\/span> 30 ICU patients<\/span><\/span> in<\/span> whom 25(OH)D was measured on ICU admission<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Assessment of Study<\/h2><\/div>

This was a pilot study of a very small number of people of Greek ethnicity only<\/span> at a single hospital. No statistical <\/span>analysis was<\/span> performed <\/span>to assess other factors that may have influenced vitamin D or clinical outcomes. <\/span>Study subjects received <\/span>only <\/span>one measurement of vitamin D status and it was <\/span>ob<\/span>tained <\/span>upon <\/span><\/span>ICU <\/span><\/span><\/span>admission.<\/span><\/span> While the results do suggest a connection between vitamin D <\/span><\/span><\/span>deficiency<\/span><\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span><\/span> COVID-<\/span><\/span><\/span>19 mortality, extrapolation is extremely limited.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Results<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>

All patients who died within 28 days belonged to the low vitamin D group. Survival analysis showed that the low vitamin D group had a higher 28-day survival absence probability (log-rank test, p = 0.01). Critically ill COVID-19 patients who died in the ICU within 28 days appeared to have lower<\/span><\/span> 25(OH)D levels <\/span><\/span>upon ICU admission <\/span><\/span><\/span>compared to survivors. When the cohort was divided at the median 25(OH)D value, the low vitamin D group had an increased risk of 28-day mortality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

P<\/span><\/span>rospective, observational study<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Eighty (80%) percent of patients had vitamin D deficiency<\/span><\/span> upon their admission to the ICU<\/span><\/span><\/span>, and the remaining <\/span><\/span>exhibited <\/span><\/span><\/span>insufficiency. Based on 25(OH)D levels, patients were stratified in two groups: higher and lower than the median value of the cohort (15.2 ng\/mL).
